Well-Tempered Blues

I

The problem with a piano

is

it only has 12 notes

II

A: “What about all the others?”

B: “But they’re just the same ones.”

C: “You’re both wrong.”

III

IV

(III was silence; rest)

Shut up!

V

Inside the confines

shut up

Inside the coffer

of hammers & strings

No one hears

the angel sings

but I heard it

heard the tune

one afternoon

in June

plucking the little

metal wire spokes

the casing of a small fan

to cool you on a

summer’s day

I heard them pray

VI

Another time

I stayed awake

all night

and heard

the bird

song of dawn

and that’s a fugue

Bach failed to recreate
